In addition to possibly spreading infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis, tattoos and piercings can cause the following complications:
- Allergic reactions. Even years after being applied, tattoo dyes can cause allergic skin reactions resulting in an itchy rash at the site. Also, nickel or brass jewelry can cause an allergic reaction.
- Oral complications. The jewelry worn in tongue piercings can chip and crack teeth and damage gums. It also tends to slur speech.
- Skin disorders. Bumps (granulomas) or raised, excessive scarring (keloids) may form around tattoos.
- Skin infections. Signs and symptoms include redness, warm skin, swelling, and puss-filled discharge. Although not common with tattoos, 30 percent of all piercings result in bacterial infections or bleeding.
Make sure to consult with your physician if any of these complications occur.
