Head neck surgery
For Complex Head and Neck Surgery, Choose a Physician
Because there are clear and substantial distinctions between the education, training, and oversight of physician surgeons and that of oral/maxillofacial surgeons, surgical procedures for complex head and neck conditions should only be performed physicians.
Unfortunately, in some areas of the United States, dentists trained in oral surgery are seeking to move beyond surgical treatment of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area even though they are not trained to do so. This expansion of practice includes an attempted move into plastic surgery and trauma care.
The Pennsylvania Medical Society has stated its opposition to oral and maxillofacial surgeons performing procedures that go beyond the scope of practice of the Dental Practice Act.
For more information, including a chart showing differences in education and training between board-certified plastic surgeons and non-physician dental surgeons, check out
