Be Smart and Be Legal

Not 21? Don’t drink, says DrugFree Pennsylvania. If you do and you receive a DUI, you can lose your license. If you are a teaching major, you can be kicked out of your major and not allowed to teach—ever.

Here are some sobering statistics from the state Department of Transportation:

  • Drivers between the ages of 16-20 were involved in 1,614 alcohol-related crashes in 2008.
  • Thirty-seven young adults were killed in those crashes, including 24 drivers who had been drinking and 10 passengers.
  • Pennsylvania’s Zero Tolerance Law carries serious consequences for those under 21 who are convicted of driving with any amount of alcohol in their blood. For example, those under 21 who are convicted of driving under the influence with a .02 blood alcohol content or greater face severe penalties, including a 12-to-18-month license suspension, 48 hours to six months in jail, and fines from $500 to $5,000.
  • Young drivers may lose their driving privileges for any underage drinking offense, whether or not a vehicle is involved.
  • Don’t do drugs. Most employers will require a drug test for pre-employment. If a trace of street drugs is found in your system, no job. No job=no money=no future.
