How should you lay a baby down to sleep—on its back, side, or stomach? If you answered “back,” you’re right.
Babies who are laid to sleep on their backs have a significantly lower chance of suffering from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) than babies who are laid to sleep on their stomachs or sides, according to the American SIDS Institute.
A recent Patient Poll by the Institute for Good Medicine at the Pennsylvania Medical Society revealed an alarming statistic that shows that many parents may be unknowingly increasing the risk of SIDS when they put their babies to bed.
About 45 percent of respondents to the poll did not know that babies should sleep on their backs, although it has been recommended for nearly a decade and a half.
