Tips for Avoiding the Super Germs

With our over-dependence on antibiotics, "super germs"—bacteria with natural resistance to all known antibiotics—are multiplying. As a result, the antibiotic becomes less effective each time you take it, and eventually becomes useless.

You can help halt the evolution of super germs and antibiotic resistance by following these rules:

Rule Number One

Finish that bottle of antibiotics. Don't stop taking them—or giving them to your child—because you or your child feels better.

Rule Number Two

Don't be tempted by leftovers from a previous prescription—even if your child gets frequent ear infections. This helps bacteria become resistant. If you follow rule #1, rule #2 will take care of itself.

Rule Number Three

Work with your doctor. Don't insist on an antibiotic if your doctor doesn't think it's necessary. When a doctor does prescribe one, ask what you're getting and why.

Rule Number Four

Don't skip doses. This causes the level of antibiotic in the bloodstream to drop, providing bacteria with a breather. Some bacteria may survive.
